Readers will recall that Kristiina Mäkelä, our Olympic Triple Jumper, had a one knee operation on an injury a few months ago. She is back on the field and will be participating this in the Finnish Athletics Championships. Here is her latest column:
By Kristiina Mäkelä, 19.7.2017
After a long period of training and preparation, it is finally time to put on my spikes and get jumping in my first competition. The Finnish Athletic Championships are held in Seinäjoki, and my first jump will happen on Friday 21.7.2017 in the Womens’ Triple Jump Qualification.
The following day I will fight to keep my status as a Finnish Champion.
Although I haven’t competed this season, nor done any full speed jumps in training, my goals are high.
My preparation has had a slightly different approach this year but I trust that it will yield results.
I am still in progress towards attaining my top shape which I will dig out for London. It is funny but true, that my two first competitions are the Finnish Championships followed by the World Championships. Not the easiest way to go but I am up for the challenge. There is nothing to lose!
I can´t wait to do my first jump. I can’t wait to scream after a good one. I can’t wait to jump over 14m again. And I can’t wait to push my boundaries even further. I can’t wait but I will wait. It’s impossible to know what’s going to happen and that is what makes it so exciting and almost scary. It’s all about believing in myself and in all the work I’ve done.
Triple jumping is not the easiest event to get back to after knee injury. According to my training, the injury seems to be history by now. However, after a break from training the muscles tend to get stiffer more easily and that is what I have been trying to manage.
The thing with triple jumping is that you can’t do it without being hundred percent sure. Being careful will only make you hurt.
The best way to keep yourself safe is to be brutal with the jumps.
I am confident, motivated and I am ready! Let the games begin!
